El Salvador Day 12 El Tunco

Waves before breakfast

We got up reasonably early and headed down for surf. I took the first shift and caught a few waves close in from the point. Once again there were a lot of people in the water, so I hung in close and caught the crumbs. Having said that they were still a lot of fun. I swapped with Christine and went into the surf resorts to ask if they had seen the key. They still hadn’t seen it, but one of the staff did suggest that I could get a replacement key cut over at La Libertad. I met up with Christine who was coming in from her surf and we made our way back to the accomodation, on the way we passed Luke who was heading down for his surf.

The great key hunt

We had a quick shower and then drove the car across to La Libertad and found some parking. We found a key cutting place that was open, however they didn’t have that style of key. We went in search of another place and picked up some food on our journey. Alas we did find a key cutting kiosk that probably had the key we needed but it was closed due to it being a Sunday.

We drove back to the house and cooked up, what had now become lunch. We made some chicken with garlic, ginger and a hint of chill. We served it with a tomato, cucumber and avocado salsa. While we were cooking a mini earth quake occurred, at first I thought it was a particularly large passing by, but when it continued for a prolonged period of time and we remembered that we were in a country that often has seismic activity we decided it was an earth quake. This is the first earth quake that I can remember ever being a part of.

Luke’s disastrous surf

Luke had not had a great surf, he had been rolled and lost his leg leash, the board had then carried on to the rocks and snapped a fin. He was at the gym by the time we arrived at the house and then he was going to go in search of replacement parts. Luke found his replacement parts and returned to the house. He had paid $45US for the leash and around the same for the fin. Bolter said that he had paid way too much when he found out how much it had all cost. For that kind of money you could buy the whole board including fins and leash back in Australia.

The afternoon surf session

We ate some lunch and then headed back down to the beach for a surf, nobody wanted to surf near the rocks after Luke’s experience. So we went back to where we had surfed on the first day. Alas the waves were terrible and difficult to catch, this shook Luke’s confidence a bit more. He was starting to think that surfing wasn’t for him. I paddled out and barely caught anything either.

After our surf we wandered down to to the Surf City and El Tunco signs to take our photographs and some drone shots. We then wandered all the way back to the villa. I got organised and headed to the gym. Alas the gym was closed by the time I arrived. The walk back was relaxing and I stopped to watch the surfers catch the last of the afternoon waves on the point as the sun slowly set on the horizon. There were a couple of drones buzzing around and recording the action. By the time I arrived back, Christine had put the dinner on to cook, I had a siesta while it was cooking.

We ate dinner and then wandered back into El Tunco to have a beer at La bonita. Afterwards Christine and I grabbed an Aussie Mike smoothie from the smoothie place in town, while Luke tracked down a fruit bowl from one of the places nearby.
