Philippines Day 13 Cebu City SM

We didn’t get up particularly early as we didn’t have a great deal planned for today. We were supposed to go to the Kawasan Falls but had found that the government had closed them down due to some dodgy business practices that had been going on. We finally got up and ate some breakfast which consisted of cornflakes with mango, dragon fruit, pineapple and banana.

The wet market

Once we had finished breakfast we decided to hunt down some food for dinner. We walked a km or so to a wet market. The venders were amused to see us there, but they were happy to help us select ingredients to make a chicken curry for dinner. On the way back to the unit we wandered down some side streets and discovered a labyrinth of shops and dwellings that were selling all manner of goods and services. Our favourite were the small bakeries selling pan de coco. We picked up a few baked goods, found a coconut vender who was happy to cut up a couple of coconuts for us.

The factory outlet

After we had stowed our score in the refrigerator back at the unit we went out to find a taxi that would take us to a factory outlet place that mum had wanted to visit. We asked the taxi driver how much it was going to cost and he quoted us 500 php. It turns out that this is twice what it would be had we simply put it on the meter. We learned our lesson after the second cab. The factory outlet consisted of a range of brand name shops that were full of merchandise and devoid of people. Andy met up with us at the factory outlet and said that if the prices were good then the place would be pumping with people. We costed a couple of items and found that they were equivalent to our back at home.

Andy’s Place

We quickly abandoned the outlets and made our way over to Andy’s place, to check out his pad and meet his family. While we were there we collected the majority of the Spanish shirts that Andy had had made up for us. The shirts had come up really well.

SM

After Andy’s place we made our way over to SM a huge super mall that had multiple levels with truck loads of shops including the likes of Porsche and Audi selling top end cars. Once again we found that in all bar a small number of shops the cost was similar to those back home. The outlier was the sports shops where everything including bikes, wall balls, weight belts and training dummies were all a fraction of the price from back in Australia. Byron ended up buying a weight belt that he wore for the rest of the journey.

A relaxed evening

After SM we decided to make our way back to the accomodation so that we could cook some dinner. While dinner was cooking Byron found a movie called The Assassin’s Body Guard, it was pretty amusing and we ended up watching it together after dinner. By the time we had finished dinner and watching the movie, it was time for bed.
