Philippines Adventure Day 7 The bike crash

I went out early to collect the XRM bike, this is a farm type motor bike and as such it had a fair bit more go in it than the scooter. I collected Christine and we rode out to the wet markets to drop the clothes and books to Angelo so that he could take them to the islands. Angelo was grateful to receive the supplies. We picked up some supplies while we were at the wet market and then I dropped Christine back at the accomodation. I rode over to Flo’s to collect one of the boards. I collected Christine on the way through and we went in search of Flo. Flo was heading out to a surf spot that was only accessible by boat, this spot had been recommended to us by a few people familiar with the La Luna surf scene.

The Motor Bike Crash

We were hunting among the myriad of driveways and small dwellings looking for the place where Flo had said to meet up. I was turning around at one point when I lost control of the bike. Thankfully Christine had hoped off the bike previously so that she could go and ask for directions. Now the bike was an automatic manual, in that it didn’t have a manual clutch. As such the break was on the same side as the throttle and the back break was foot operated. I had pulled the throttle to start the turn and the bike had kicked off, in a moment of panic, I then pulled on the break without releasing the throttle. This stopped the front wheel, but of course the back wheel kept spinning. I ran over a sign, some palm fronds and then ended up in a heap. Thankfully the surf board rack took the brunt of the impact and saved my leg. The accident had also caused some minor damage to the surf board. I had only ended up with some minor scratches and a bruised ego. I was a lot more cautious after that. A stack of people came from everywhere to help me up, they switched off the bike and advised me to relax and take it easy on the throttle.

We found where Flo had launched off from a short time later. It was low tide and the boats could only take you so far. You had to walk the rest of the way over sea urchin infested reef. Flo had almost opted out, she did however say that the surf was fantastic. As Flo had already left and the place didn’t look overly appealing, we opted to go to collect some more supplies from the supermarket instead.

Afternoon Surf Session

In the afternoon we loaded the board onto the bike and made our way over to Flo’s for a surf. We picked up the other surf board from out the front of Flo’s place and then met her at Jacking Horse for an afternoon surf session. Once again the waves were fun and relaxing. Christine said that she also managed to catch a few. She spent most of her time at the Quicksilver break where we had surfed on the first day.

Once we were done with our surf session, we loaded both boards onto the bike, this certainly changed the dynamic of the bike, and made our way back to Siargao residency to cook dinner.

Dinner and Desert

For dinner we fried up some chicken, that we had collected from the wet markets, with honey, soy, ginger, garlic and chilli. We served it with vegetables and rice. For desert we wandered down to the Harana Surf Resort, which is only located around fifty meters or so up the road from Siargao Residency. We shared a coconut shake and a banana and mango smoothie.
